Story Pole Have Been Used In The Custom Cabinet Making Trade For A Long Time

Sure you could make yourself a sketch on a 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper, but it never seems to have the accuracy, some critical thing is missing or there is the human factor of miss read tape measures and bad writing.

A story pole is traditionally a strip of wood the length of the wall being storied or 2 strips of wood that lap each strip butting ito tho opposite corner and the lap marked on the pole. The job of the story pole is to hold all the layout information about the wall. Such things as length, height, window locations, door locations. casing widths, electrical outlet locations, holes, bumps, squareness of corners etc. — everything that is needed or might affect what you are going to build along that wall.

It's an accurate permanent record that can be referred back to throughout the project.
