Let's Start With A 3 Wire 220 V Outlet

The three wires are the two hot wires that have 220 V between them and the third wire is the ground wire.

This is not like the 4 wire 220V outlet where the fourth wire is neutral where you get 120V between each hot wire and the neutral.
