There are several options for adding lighting to a closet.

The first step though is to get power to the closet.

If you are lucky you can tie into an existing circuit in the attic and drop a wire down the wall for the switch and a wire through the ceiling for the light.

For first floor closets you could also come up from the basement below.

There are a variety of switch options, from your standard wall switch, to motion sensor switches to switches in the door frame that are activated by the door opening.

For light there is the old light bulb, to florescent strips to LED lights.
